45 Years Condensed to One Page

John went into Navy boot camp in San Diego November of 1950. May 8, 1951 John Hanifin and Barbara Starnes were married at St. James Church in Perris. During the Navy years they lived in Romoland, with some time spent in San Diego where John Attended refrigeration/air conditioning school for the Navy. John was aboard the USS Fort Marion LSD 22 for 3 years, and the USS Logan APA 196 for one year. He was discharged February, 1955 and in March of 1955 he started working for Sears Roebuck and Co. They remained in Romoland, working with Barbara's father Frank Starnes, in Potatoes and cattle.

In 1958 their first home was built in Perris at 920 Park Ave. John worked at Sears in Riverside and also spent time with his father Tom Hanifin fanning and raising cattle. John decided lie would like to be active in civic affairs. In 1960 John started helping with the Christian Living Work Shop at St. James Church. In 1962 he was appointed by the City Council to the City of Perris planning commission, spending approximately five years on that commission. 1962 was a busy year, John also was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Perris High School Board of Trustees' and was elected for a second term in 1967. He was named Secretary of the Riverside County School Board's Association in 1969. At the same time Barbara was busy at home raising the six boys, but still found time to volunteer at the schools and was also a charter member of the Junior Women's Club. John was also, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus in Perris during this time.

In 1970 John was transferred by Sears to San Diego as assistant group Installation Manager for the San Diego Group Stores. In 1974 they transferred again, this time to Portland Oregon, where John became manager for Sears Home Improvements Products and Services for the state of Oregon and SW Washington.

Their years in the Portland area have been very enjoyable with die boys growing up, as they became more independent Barbara went to work for the Beaverton School District and retired in 1992 after 15 years. John retired from Sears in 1991 after 35 years and is now a consultant in the home improvement business for Scars and two other companies. They now reside in Brightwood Oregon, 50 miles east of Portland at the base of Mt. Hood.

Their sons are all doing well;

    David, his wife Kris and their children Brian and Melissa live in Santee, California.

    Daniel, his wife Pain and Children Matt, Ryan and Kristin live in Phoenix, Arizona.

    Terry, his children Eric, Carl and John live in Brightwood, Oregon.

    Tom, his wife Sherry and Daughter Jessica live in Beaverton, Oregon.

    Jamie his sons Trenton and Jeremy live in Beaverton, Oregon.

    Kevin, our youngest is attending Oregon State University in Corvallis Oregon.
