My grandfather Thomas Hanifin came from Ireland with his mother and father and settled in Weymouth Mass.I remember seeing a picture of a family that my grandmother Florence said was my family from California.Rumor has it there is also a proper spelling issue of the Hanifin name with us also. They say the two brothers came over and landed in weymouth ma and they fought over a girl that divided the brothership and they decided to spell their names differently as to show they were no longer family.Pretty sad.I wonder if my grandmother was the girl.

My Great Great Grandmother (Elizabeth Sullivan B:1847) and Grandfather (William Hanifin)were both from Tralee, I think. I am looking for relatives that are still in County Kerry. My ancestry is so very important to me as it was to them. I have hit a wall in my genealogy search. I am trying to find some information on the deceased parents of both of them. I seemed to think that Eliz. Sullivan came to America, and the USA with someone, (maybe an aunt, Ellen O'Connor)? I think William's parents were Michael Hanifin and Catherine Leyne? This is where I have run into trouble finding anything on them. Elizabeth Sullivan (B:3/1847, brothers: James, Patrick & Timothy) in Co. Kerry and William Hanifin, (B: 1837 in Lateeve Beg, Co. Kerry). His siblings were Mary, Patrick, Timothy, & Daniel. Both Grandma and Grandpa Hanifin are buried in Calvary Roman Catholic Cemetary in Nashville, TN. USA. If anyone has any info on them, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am Mary Dean Hanifin of Ronceverte West Virginia. My father was Roy Terrence Hanifin at time's we spelled our name as Hanafan, I do not know why. I was born May 10,1940 to Roy and Rose Toothman Hanifin. To my knowledge they were born in Ronceverte, West Virginia. My father worked for the C&O Railroad Company. I have a sister, Margaret Ann and a brother Patrick now deceased. I was told my grandfather came to the states from Ireland. His name was Patrick Terrance Hanifin. He married my grandmother. Her name was Lillian. After he died, Lillian married Elliet Kirby. Elliet had a son who was very highly ranked with C&O Railroad. He was named after his father, who we called E.D or grandpa. More when I can think of it--- HaHa.

My grandmother was Catherine Mary (Kitty) Hanafin (born 5/04/1907), her father Denis Hanafin (born 1881- 1882) married Margaret Twomey in 1902-1903.

At the time of the 1911 Census Denis and Margaret lived at 8 Spa Road, Tralee with their children Jeremiah (born 1905),Denis (born 1910)and Catherine. Before her marriage to Denis I understand that Margaret spent some time in America before returning to Ireland. Following Margarets death Denis later married Susan(?)Devane and went on to have a family of at least two girls (Annie and a sister who went to Australia) and a boy Thomas who was a Railwayman like his father.

At the time of her marriage to John Mason (25/2/1930) Catherine's residence is given as Kilduff, Ballymacelligot, the occupation of her father Denis is given as Railwayman.

Jeremiah (Jerry) married Margaret Barry and had a family of three boys (Eddie, Dermott and Denis) and three girls (Helen, Kathlene and Margaret),their family home was at Tursillagh.

If any of this sounds familiar then I would much appreciate your help with this branch of the Hanafin family tree. Any info on the related Twomey side would also be of interest.

Hello,

As we near the 10th anniversary of the forum (and the 12th anniversary of the site), I am proud to reveal the new and improved Hanifin Family Genealogy site! The revamped site is far easier to update, and less vulnerable to junk mail senders (aka spammers).

Please ask you questions here, as you are more likely to get your questions answered if you post them here than if you send them directly to me. [:-)]

This is also a great place to share your family stories and history! I hope you find this forum helpful!

My father made mention of a great grand unce of his called Tadhg an ”r (Tadhg of the gold) who returned to Kerry from America with gold he had prospected whilst there and set up a pub in Tralee. He would have been a brother of my great great grand father, John Brosnan of Ballinorig, Tralee (b. 1845 d. 1918) Is this the same Tadgh as is referenced in your family tree?

PS: Great website

Perhaps WE'RE related... my great grandfather's name was Cornelius Hanafin, who came to America from Ireland!! He was married to Margaret Blood... I'm sure the rest of my family would be very interested in finding even MORE extended relatives! (We're already a rather large family... My grandfather, George, was one of 11, and my mother, Judy, was one of 10!!) We're mostly concentrated in Massachusetts, in the Boston and Burlington areas!

~*Savannah*~

We are also from Kerry but not artfert. I know of Jerry there who also keeps greyhounds. We came from Ballymackelligott outside tralee. As there are very few Hannafins around we must have some connection going back. I would think thatthere are more hannafins in usa than in kerry.
Regards
Kevin Hannafin

My Grandfather, Maurice Hannafin, came from Ardfert, Co. Kerry. He had brothers, Michael and Peter Hannafin (or Hanifin) who worked their farm in Ardfert, Farenwilliam, County Kerry. Maurice had two sisters, Mae and Honora (Christine) who moved to the states many years ago. Have been to Ireland once in the early 80s. Am looking for any relatives in Ardfert, or elsewhere, who may know this family. Maurice moved to the US and married Mary Cahill, and they had two children, Richard and Maura Hannafin. When I was in Ardfert in 1984, I met my 2nd cousin, who owned a pub in Ardfert, named Jerry Hanifin.
Any help would be appreciated.
God Bless You All.
Slainte!
Maureen
My name is James M Manning Haymarket Virginia formerly of The Bronx, New York. My Grandmother was Ellen ìNellieî Hanifin. She was born approximately 1872 and married Johnie Nellie OíMainin (Manning) and lived in Terravane, Ballyferriter, Dingle. She died circa 1957 in Terravane. I am told that she had a brother John Hanifin who emigrated to the USA and settled very near Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. John had at least 5 children. A son Jerry (Gerry) and four daughters. A first cousin of Jerry would be a Reverend Martin Manning from IOWA who has lost touch with this family and its progeny. Do any of the Hanifin Family Trees have a similar thread in same?
This October 2008 we are going to Ireland and plan on visiting Tralee, County Kerry. John, William, and Bridget Hannifin, with her husband Patrick Houlihan, my gggrandparents, immigrated in 1846, are buried here in Florence, Oneida County, New York, and the inscription on their gravemarkers indicates "Born in Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland" Anyone know of these Hannafins and how to find their ancestoral home?

Hello, my name is Lisa DeBarr and I was born, raised and still reside in West Virginia. My Great Grandmother's name was Icy Hanifan (note spelling variation).

Here is my quick Hanifan Lineage:

Morris Hanifan (b. abt. 1820) GGG Grandfather
Patrick Hanifan (b. 1857) GG Grandfather
Icy Hanifan (b.1880) G Grandmother
Alma Grim (b. 1906) Grandmother
Freeman L. DeBarr (b.1941) Father
Lisa A. DeBarr (b. 1971) Myself

The Morris Hanifan mention above may also be spelled Morrison as well a Maurice.

Next week, I am traveling to Ireland. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on how I may conduct family research while there. Where did the Hanifans originate?? (And all the other spelling variations).

I've seen County Kerry noted most, then Cork---even an account of County Cavan (??)

Thank you for your website!

Lisa A. DeBarr
WV
LisaDeBarr@yahoo.com
