Ny great grandfather Cornelius hanifn came to New Zealand woth his brother Michael about 1874.He married Julia Lucy in 1181 in Temuka south Canterbury and had 10 children before he died young at the age of 40 with the 10th child still on the way.Brother Michael had an equally large family and the same names were used for both families though they were started 10 years apart. The childrens names of both families were Patrick, cornelius Jeremiah(My grand father) margaret William Michael Catherine,Julia and some one or two indiviaul names.
On the marriage record in the family bible Cornelius is listed as coming from Balymalis Milltown and Listry, while his bride came from the Ashill Parish BallyMcelligott both of county kerry.
the parents of cornelius Hanifin are listed on the official marriage certificate as Jeremiah Hanifin and Margaret Clifford.Wehave very little information as to how or when exactly the tow brother came out to NZ or whether they had any brothers or sisters left behind in Ireland. They now have many descendents hanifins , Gallens Sullivans and other family names in the Canterbury district of New Zealand.
Great that there is a Hanifin web site and that we can find out where they have all gone because I don't think there are too many Hanifins left in Ireland.Has anyone got a connection with this branch of the Hanifins.this is the common spelling of the name in NZ though hannifin and hanifan does appear as well.
