Your website caught my eye, nice work. I am currently doing a family history study of the Hannifins/ Hanifins who were part of the Famine Irish. Several Hannifin families were well established in LaSalle and Livingston Counties of Illinois in the 1860′s.I still have much work to do to make a solid connection back to Ireland but the Hanifin name is almost exclusive to County Kerry. In 1835 thre were over 100 persons in Kerry named Hanifin and in 1852 there were a lot less……The implication is that they either died or emmigrated during the famine of 1845 – 1850. In Ireland there are several variations of the Hanifin name, all of which appear to be related. To day there are lots of Hanifins in the USA, it is not a common name but not rare either. Good luck with your website project

Hi Will,
I am also interested in Older Hannifin Families. My Ggrandfather Michael arrived in Canada about 1849 – 1850. He married a gal, Mary Ann O’Connor, born in Nova Scotia, whose parents were from Ireland, in 1851. So I have dedicated this year to finding out as much about this family as I can. It is nice to find so many people are now doing research on the Hannifin name. I have been searching for my family for about 10 years, the computer has helped quite a lot.
I have corresponded with about 4 or 5 others, who have their Hannifin families in the Mi-West. I believe my Hannifins left Canada and settled in MA, which is where my grandfather settled.
Hope to hear from you about your research.

Will Hannifan, I just started last year trying to locate the Hanephin’s. I was told, they changed the spelling of last name. To list the Census years. 1849-S.A.
Hanephin-Benton Cty,Or (probably family);1860 Iowa Simeon Hannefan age 36 born in Ireland (my great
grandfather); 1880 Iowa grandfather Simon Henephin age 28 b.NY 1852; 1900 Minn- Simon Hanephin great grandfa; 1910 Mo.Simon great grand
father plus my grandfa – Simon; also 1920 lived in Mo.
Confusing with the different spellings of last name.
I have no idea what part of Ireland they came from, My mother Alice Hanephin stated that the Hennepin Cty in Minn was named after a priest Louis Hennepin is suppose to be related to us? He also explored with LaSalle in the middle 1700′s. The Hanephin’s listed here owned their own construction business, worked on the railroad and highways around Minn, Iowa, Mo, Ky, etc. Thanks for taking time to read and when you have time, please respond. I need to obtain birth certificates on the oldest Hanephin.
